The Mahindra Marazzo is the brand’s most recent effort of making an MPV look stylish. Mahindra Cars have come up with a smooth, rounded design that won’t win your heart over, but it’s not something you can’t look at either. Despite its long wheelbase, it is decently proportioned and gets the usual cab-forward MPV shape. At the front, it gets a stubby bonnet, swept-back headlights and a huge grille. There are a few elements that help it stand out, like the shapely bonnet, wide door mounted mirrors and mock LED strips on top of the headlights. It gets the signature Mahindra Cars toothy grille and thank fully, it looks unlike anything in its range.
Along the sides, it gets some lines over the mildly flared wheel arches. Inside the Marazzo, there are horizontal elements dividing the dashboard, which is a nice blend of materials and textures. The black and beige along with the piano black panels look upmarket. The cabin quality is good, which is easily seen in the black plastic on the dashboard and door trims. The seats are well made and supportive. Mahindra Cars have equipped the Marazzo with a new 1497cc, four-cylinder diesel engine producing 121bhp and 300Nm of torque. The engine is refined; it’s silent at idle, but once the revs start climbing, the engine does get a bit noisy.
In terms of styling, the Scorpio has been updated over the years but the basic silhouette remains the same. At the front, the Scorpio features a seven-slot design for the grille. Even the front bumper has been restyled; it gets different fog lights, a new skid plate and mildly updated projector headlights and ORVMs that feature side indicators. At the back, the tail lights have been shortened and gone is the plastic bit that bordered the number plate. On the S11 variant, you get dark grey faux-leather upholstery for the seats, steering wheel and gear lever.
Apart from a few updates, the cabin remains largely similar to the previous-generation model. Seated in the driver’s seat, you get a good view from up ahead, but the plastic finish needs some looking into on the next-gen model. The mHawk140 engine gets a Borg Warner turbocharger, producing 138bhp and 320Nm of torque. There is a difference in initial acceleration and the mid-range is stronger, which means overtaking should be a breeze. The engine does’t seem stressed and top-end performance is impressive.
The updated Mahindra XUV500 sports a new front grille, featuring chrome studs along with chrome outlining and smoked-out sides. The headlights look similar to the older ones, but you get projectors for low beam. And there’s a new LED DRL strip above the headlights; the fog light housing gets a mild restyling and the XUV500 gets dual-tone 18-inch alloy wheels. You get chrome strips on the doors, but the rear is where the biggest change lies: an all-new tailgate with newly designed tail lamps and a roof spoiler too. The cabin gets an all-black theme with quilted tan-leather for the seat upholstery. The seats look good and are comfortable; the central console sports a piano-black look along with brushed-silver bits.
Some of the plastics have a soft-touch feel to them and there’s contrast stitching above the dashboard. The Scorpio is powered by a 2.2-litre diesel engine making 152bhp and 360Nm of torque. In the lower part of the rev range, the engine is now more responsive and the motor pulls till 4000rpm, after which power slowly tapers off. Paired to the engine is a 6-speed manual transmission.
